Dear Yuletide Author:

Thank you so much for writing a story for me! :D I hope at least some of the prompts and suggestions below are helpful to you, and that you have a generally excellent Yuletide this year. Hope this letter's not too tl;dr—is 7,000 words too much? enough?—optional details are always optional. I'm very excited for fic in the small fandom(s) of my heart. <3

Thank you again for writing fic for me! I hope some of this has been helpful, and I'd be happy to clarify through the mods or whatever if I've been confusing or haven't given you enough to work with. Onward! <3

Trying to figure out what order the stories were written for the MCU Rolling Remix 2017 story set--which I'm finding harder than last time, even though there's fewer stories.

I know there's two streams, and I've figured out what I think are the first two stories in each stream. Then there's three stories about Wanda (but I am not sure what sparked the first of them) and two stories about Steve, Tony, Natasha, and a robot, and then one story (that might be related to that one somehow?) set in Wakanda after Civil War (the others seem to all be based on Age of Ultron though).

HMMMM.

Current theories:

Stream One:
Fractures and Echoes
Between Past and Present Tense
Captain America Was Here [carries over the Steve vs Tony, Avengers team theme]
Worlds Apart (Coming Together)
Until We Hit the Ground (The Exit Sandman Remix) [IDK where this one goes remix/plot-wise, but this is the last slot left, and it has a later story number than the others]

Stream Two:
Fractures and Echoes
Paper Wings
Gaze Upon the Glass (a war poem remix) [carries over the grief/hospitals/bedside theme but changes it from Steve & Peggy to Wanda & Pietro?]
Bedside Vigil (The Cups of Comfort Remix)
Rebuilding, Restoring (The Found Family Remix)

Alternately, maybe Captain America Was Here is a remix of Paper Wings, and Gaze Upon the Glass picks up the "Steve's past" theme from Between Past and Present Tense (Steve calling Tony Howard --> Steve remembering other stuff from the 40s).

Anybody else have thoughts?

Story-wise Until We Hit The Ground was really good (or maybe just very angsty, it's one of those days where I can't tell), and the ones with Steve and Tony arguing over how to run the Avengers team (via smashing Tony's robot) were a lot of fun. I'm glad Wanda got so many stories, even though I can't quite follow the thread that got from what I think are the earlier stories to that. Overall it seems like more contemplative, even sad, stories this time out, but with a strong team-looks-out-for-each-other vibe, which I like.

So I uh haven't posted here in...mumblety mumble...way too long. But [community profile] fandom_stocking is live. Hurray! I thought I'd post a link to my stocking here, partly so I can find it again and partly of course so anyone else who wants to put stuff in it can.

Nenya's Stocking 2016.

It's something of a tl;dr list this year because I went through all my old requests and updated them. But that just means more options for people who feel like stuffing it, I guess?

IRL we have a GIANT FUCKING TREE that Mucca found and cut down, and a bunch of small presents tucked under it for when her parents come out to visit next week. It looks like being a cozy lighthouse Christmas (interrupted by episodes of art class, for me). I'm looking forward to it.

My AO3 fics are thisaway. Ask me any of the following questions, should you so choose!

1. How did you come up with the title to [insert fic]?
2. Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?
3. What character do you identify with most?
4. Is there a song or a playlist to associate with [insert fic]?
5. If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it be about?
6. Care to share a favorite hurt/comfort fic?
7. Care to share a favorite crack fic?
8. How would you describe your style?
9. Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?
10. Write or describe an alternative ending to [insert fic].
11. What's the angstiest idea you've ever come up with?
12. What's the weirdest AU you've ever come up with?
13. Got any premises on the back burner that you'd care to share?
14. Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?
15. How do you begin a story--with the plot, or the characters?
16. Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an "architect" or a "gardener"? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)
17. Do you have any discarded scenes/storylines/projects?
18. Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?
19. Any fandom tropes you can't resist?
20. Any fandom tropes you can't stand?
21. A pairing you might like to write for, but haven't tried yet.
22. A secondary (or underrated) character you want to see more of in fic?
23. Do you like more general prompts, or more specific ones?
24. A character you enjoy making suffer.
25. A character you want to protect.
26. Major character death--do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can't tolerate?

Meanwhile, I've written a couple of drabbles for the Imzy multifandom drabble fest. I'd forgotten how hard drabbles can be! I'm usually only just getting started on my first thought in the story by word 75 or so. :D I did one for Ghost Soup Infidel Blue (fandoms made 110% of in-jokes, yay!) and one Mad Max: Fury Road/Doctor Who crossover.

Suppose I should link my fic for the MCU Rolling Remix (Fury/Hill, whoo) at some point, but right now I'm meant to be making supper.

The MCU Rolling Remix was really fun. Belatedly linking my fic!

Title: Seventeen Minutes (The Heartbeats Remix)
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] nenya_kanadka
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Pairing/Characters: Maria Hill, Nick Fury
Rating: G/T
Word Count: 1850 words
Summary: When the world ends, Maria Hill is the one who brings a man back from the dead. But it's one thing to know how, and another thing to press her hands to his cold chest and hope against hope for an elusive heartbeat. (Or, Maria's POV on the whole faking-Fury's-death thing.)
Notes: Remixed from Raisons d'être by [archiveofourown.org profile] rmc28, and then further remixed into Can You Keep a Secret? by [archiveofourown.org profile] scribblemyname.

This whole thing was scads of fun. It's the first time I've written for MCU, which I found a bit intimidating, and we each had only two weeks to write so the fest wouldn't take sixteen years to finish. So I scrambled around researching and scribbled madly, but the accomplishment of writing a thing (which I haven't been basically at all this year, not since Fandom Stocking in December/January) absolutely made up for it.

And then guessing what order the fics had been written in was deeply entertaining. :D I'm pleased to note that I guessed the first four in my stream (the one before the one I remixed, the one I remixed & mine (obviously), and the one after mine). I also guessed that the last two in the stream were related to each other (OMG go read the Extremis!Pepper!Cap one right now) but not that they were related to the other four. Still working my way through the other streams but it's all really cool and I would totally do it again.

List the first lines of your last ten stories. See if there are any patterns.

1. Once upon a time the Smoking Alpaca was lounging about in her smoking jacket, reading forbidden Belladonna femslash on the compound divan, when the Sweater Pony clopped in.

2. "Oh no!" cried the Twelfth Doctor.

3. The Doctor slams the TARDIS doors shut behind him and leans back against them, hearts pounding.

4. The flash of black fire from the Shadow vessel masks the stomach-dropping lurch as the rip in spacetime grabs her.

5. The last thing Susan had ever expected to be doing in Tuzanor was watching Daffy Duck.

6. "Close your eyes."

7. The figure in brown and grey melted out of the shadows and matched his stride before Stephen even realized he was there.

8. Michael wasn't sure what it was that brought him out of a sound sleep at three o'clock in the morning.

9. Autumn in the Shire was always glorious, but Frodo thought the orange and red and yellow leaves and the hazy mists over the Water were especially beautiful this year.

10. "Go to bed, Ma. Really. We're fine."

First of all, ten fics takes me back three years. O.O God, I write slow.

Less opening dialogue than I thought! Less present-tense than I thought, too. (All the dialogue ones that don't show tense immediately are past tense in the next sentence.)

Does tend to bring up the protagonist's name fairly quickly. I seem to be attempting to grab people's interest with the first line; don't know how effective that is.

I still write in small fandoms. (The Twelve & Clara fic was for FFA's Bad Bang, thus a small corner of a megafandom, and not serious fic in the slightest.)

There is a snipe in our basement! Mucca found it half-stunned from the storm and took it in. In my muzzy half-awake state when she told me about it, I was sure it was a ruse to get me out of bed (appreciated, admittedly) but apparently snipe are like geese in that they are in fact actual birds as well as metaphors for pointless projects.

It is a terribly cute bird, all multiple shades of brown with a bit of orange on the tail, a loooong bill, and apparently a yen for more sleep. I feel you, birdie, I do. It wouldn't fly away when we released it, so we've tucked it back in its box in the basement for now. I told Mucca maybe it had been conked on the head and forgotten it was a Time Lord. In other news, I'm wearing my Eight Of Hearts t-shirt today.

ETA: Bird now let go into garden. Seems less stunned.

Instead of being sunny (:D) or rainy or even flat overcast (:|) today, it was kind of half and half when I got up. Which is to say huge towers of rainclouds (which yesterday were doing their earnest best to dump their contents on us all) being blown past in a very brisk wind, such that the sun was peeking out more often than not. By now, it's mostly sunny and blue (whoo!), but there are still plenty of clouds still lurking and I'd be highly surprised if we didn't get more rain by tomorrow.

Thus, I am going for a short walk up towards the light tower while I can do it without being soaked.

Recent media: Stumbled across Bunnicula while moving shelves the other day. I may have broken something laughing. Immediately ordered most of the series from library-books-by-mail, which I shall have to justify with a straight face when they come in. :D

Finished watching season 1 of Agents of SHIELD in preparation for this week's episode, but haven't actually seen either it or the new Sleepy Hollow yet. Looking forward to both. Was rather surprised by how gripping the last half-season of AOS got, actually, given its slow start. I have a lot of feelings, but not enough to ship anyone. Like, at all. Except possibly May/Hill/Potts/Romanov.

Current fic, unrelated to any of the above, is in the home stretch. Whoo. Have also committed fic for the last two rounds of Bad Bang. Not the Preston Manning/Lucien Bouchard love epic, though all Canadians on my flist must go read that immediately.

Keeping up with this season's Doctor Who and enjoying it rather a lot.

Must go get that walk.

This is actually the second time someone has offered to do this for one of my fics, but the first time I know of that it's been completed.

A couple of days ago someone on Fanfiction.net PM'd me to ask if they could translate my Garak/Bashir story "A Hard Landing" into Russian. Fandom: Hornblower/Doctor Who fusion
Pairing/Characters: Eighth Doctor, Horatio Hornblower/William Bush, Horatio Hornblower/Eighth Doctor
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4600 words
Summary: ‘Make me a warrior,’ he said. ‘Watch me,’ said the TARDIS. Prequel fic for the imaginary Big Finish audio dreamed up by the same authors.
Notes: The one where Lt. William Bush is actually the Eighth Doctor. I usually feel foolish about most characters-played-by-same-actor-are-same-person fic, but if you're a Time Lord who can canonically appear to be entirely human, well...there are unexplored possibilities there. And this fic is just bloody brilliant. Heartwrenching, like a kick in the chest, but ugh so good. I especially love the treatment of what it actually means to be a warrior, and the parallels between Horatio/Bush and Doctor/TARDIS (or Doctor/companion).

Title: Winter Garden of Our Crumbled Hearts

Fandom: Luther
Pairing/Characters: John Luther/Mark North/Alice Morgan
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 4400
Summary: It's Mark – soft-spoken, reasonable, academic Mark North with his tweed sports coats and his bohemian scarves – who slips the handcuffs on him.
Notes: I'm not hugely fannish about Luther in general, mostly because the main character is uncomfortably fucked up. But I did wonder if there was Luther/Mark North slash, and yes, yes there is; this is probably the hottest piece of it on AO3, despite actually being a threesome with Alice. The mutual grief between Luther and Mark over Zoe is well-drawn here, but tbh I'm in this one for the scorchingly hot mental images. Who doesn't want Paul McGann tying Idris Elba to a chair? :D

Title: Cafestrovalva
Author: [livejournal.com profile] x_los
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing/Characters: Eighth Doctor/Jacobi!Master
Rating: R
Word Count: 13,500 words in two parts
Summary: "You could very easily be poisoning these people. You might be attempting to weaken this time line by feeding it a steady diet of anachronisms—softening it up in preparation for a larger plan. You might, Master, be capable of anything. Or at least of anything but running a tea shop."
Notes: In which the Master seems to have retired, the Doctor doesn't believe a word of it, and they slowly come to an accommodation. In a tea shop. I love the skittishness of Eight in this, and the humour, and the way the tension is slowly tightened over the course of the fic simply because the Doctor wants to be able to trust the Master, but that has never ever ended well for him. My problem with Doctor/Master fic has always been that either it's written as fluff (which I can't believe in) or tragedy (and I like happy endings). This managed what I thought impossible: an AU for them that doesn't end in disaster. Also, tea, and someone who may or may not be Uncle Iroh.

nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (Danielle Rousseau is sane)
Okay, so, two months is certainly not the longest I've gone without updating LJ, but for someone with over a hundred icons, it's rather ridiculous.

Between having post-holiday-fest writer's block and getting an ereader for my birthday, I've been reading a lot more than I've been writing lately. It's been Actual Books more than fanfic, for the most part, although GrabMyBooks and the AO3 download function mean I can read just about anything on the Kobo. Which means I can read longfic on work breaks or on the bus, instead of just at my computer. Hurray for portability!

Back in February I decided to watch all the Lost episodes with Danielle Rousseau in them, because I like Mira Furlan but didn't think the show itself was all that interesting. So over the course of a couple of weeks, [personal profile] muccamukk saw me go through the Lost fan's emotional arc, highly condensed. ("Oh, interesting!" "Neat characters!" "...WTF are they doing to Sayid?" "Who with the smoke monster what now?" "The hell, Ben?" "WTF Jack's emo beard of manpain?" "I hate this island so much but I can't stop watching!" Mercifully, the finale intervened at that point. I still don't get the finale. But I like Claire and Charlie and Sayid and Danielle and Kate.)

I then inhaled all of [livejournal.com profile] bachlava's post-canon AU fixit fic for Danielle and Alex, because seriously, show? That was Tasha-Yar-and-the-giant-oil-slick levels of pointless character death, there. (No, I don't care about Ben's drama over getting Alex killed. Cult leader = dnw.) Lovely, lovely fic, hit a whole bunch of my narrative kinks for characters surviving certain kinds of trauma and taking care of each other afterward.

I also finally got around to reading both Redshirts by John Scalzi and Ana Mardoll's Pulchritude, which I'd been meaning to for a while. I'd probably rate both of them a B+.
Cut for spoilers/reviews )

Other things I've used the ereader for:

--the PsyCop novels by Jordan Castillo Price (featuring a gay medium (as in psychic) cop, and a LOT of fanfic-level NC-17 slash sex)

--Dark Mirror by Diane Duane, in which Picard, Troi, and Geordi La Forge (with the help of an OC who is totally a wizard from the Young Wizards universe) run into their evil counterparts in the Mirror Universe. Evil!Troi realllllly likes putting people in Agony Booths. :/ But our!Troi and Geordi save the day and it is lovely.

--The Practice of Barrayaran Sex by Philomytha (Aral and Cordelia's wedding/wedding night)

--221B Barrayar by Wandering (Lord Auditor Sherlock Holmes and Lord Auditor Miles Vorkosigan take a case together, whilst Watson and Ivan share identical looks of admiring horror)

Writing-wise, I'm ignoring all my WIPs in favour of something with OCs that exactly one other person on the planet cares about. It's, er, better than nothing? But then, Mucca's in town; when Mucca's in town I tend to watch more canons (see above: we're also following Elementary and doing a TNG rewatch) and write less. Maybe when she buckles down to her latest fest-fic, I'll Kitten War my way to victory.
