nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (DS9 trifecta of awesome)
I didn't sign up for Yuletide this year (though I did nominate for Foreigner, which got fic, and I read some lovely things by other people). Maybe next year. Instead I participated in [community profile] femslash12 and [community profile] fandom_stocking, the first fests I've done in ages. There was a certain amount of hair-pulling and last-minute nail-biting (see also: first fests done in ages), but all in all I had a great time.

For [community profile] femslash12 I wrote in a new fandom and received a gift for a rarepair I'd requested and not expected to have filled due to lack of canon. For [community profile] fandom_stocking I was a bit nervous, as I wasn't sure how it worked and whether I was doing enough, but it looks like all the people I did fills for got lots of presents besides mine (so, just in case mine sucked :P), and OMG, so many shiny things for me! I'm bouncing in my seat here. ♥ (Stocking here; feel free to go read.)

Presents for me:
Doctor Who (River/Oswin, Jenny/Vastra), Star Trek: DS9 (Kira Nerys), Foreigner (Jago & Banichi), Babylon 5 (Stephen/Marcus) )

Things what I wrote:
Rizzoli & Isles, Lord of the Rings (Frodo/Sam/Rosie), Babylon 5 (Jeff/Michael) )

Bounce, bounce, bounce!

Babylon 5 has been accepted for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide this year!

\o/ \o/ \o/

When I tried to nominate it as "Babylon 5 & Related Fandoms," it told me that someone had nominated Delenn, Susan Ivanova, and John Sheridan under "Babylon 5." So I changed my fandom nom to that, and my characters to Jeffrey Sinclair, Lennier, Talia Winters, and Lyta Alexander. So far, Talia has been approved. (I assume she went through on the same ticket as the person who submitted Susan.) All approved! :D

Star Trek: DS9 is apparently also small enough that it has been accepted too! Joy. Someone else got Garak, Julian, Jadzia Dax, and Kira Nerys approved, so I submitted Ben Sisko, Jake Sisko, Kasidy Yates and Ezri Dax. Captain Sisko's They have all been approved. \o/

Also I put in (of course) for CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series. (Bren Cameron, Jago, Banichi, Algini...there really ought to be five spaces for this fandom, to fit in Bren's entire aishid! Poor Tano. <3) Other people have nominated Cyteen and the Company Wars.

Spreadsheet for accepted Yuletide fandoms here, for the curious.

Title: Camper
Fandom: CJ Cherryh's Foreigner
Author: [livejournal.com profile] zebra_in_dream
Pairing: Bren Cameron/Jago, NC-17
Summary: The matter in the tent before Mogari-nai from a different perspective. (Jago POV)

Someone has written Foreigner for the Porn Battle! It actually did not occur to me to prompt for this fandom, but maybe I should have. Anyway--Jago, I adore Jago, and it's nice to see her side of things. Bren spends so much time in Inheritor worrying over the mixed signals he and she are sending, and whether they will ever get together, and then of course they finally do, famously in a tent while on the run. So it's nice to see Jago trying to figure him out; I'd love to see more of her in fic in future.

After taking those snapshots of atevi Second Life characters the other night, I got the urge to make a human in that world, specifically a human living in atevi society. So here's the girl version of Bren Cameron, paidhi-interpretor between humans and aliens, wearing the white colours of diplomacy:

And the height difference:

I have half-assed hani from the Chanur books somewhere as well, but those aren't really ready to show off.

In which I use virtual reality to make fanart. (If the Internet is for porn, Second Life is for cosplay.)

I love love love how this turned out. It's taken me about five years to get this look. This is for CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series--a character I played in a roleplay once, but feel free to imagine she's a lord of the aishi'ditat, or perhaps Jago on a fancy dress day, if you like. :D

Day 7

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Drop a link to your wish-list in this post. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Ooh, presents!

1) Babylon 5 fanfic, Stephen Franklin/Marcus Cole. I think I've found precisely two pieces of fic for this pairing, which is a shame because they are lovely and snarky together, and both very pretty, and they were even fake!married on the show. :D

(What I've read so far: Limbs and Outward Flourishes and Five Things Marcus And Stephen Did On Their Honeymoon(s))

Stephen Franklin/Cailyn James would also make me happy. Or just Franklin himself. But I'd love some Stephen/Marcus!

2) Any fanfic for CJ Cherryh's Foreigner universe, especially with Banichi in it.

I kind of want the slash AU where it's Bren/Banichi instead of Bren/Jago. Which I am probably not going to get, because Bren/Jago is pretty awesome (I ship it) and the juggernaut canon ship. And also the fandom is so small and most of the people I know in it have friended the author on Facebook, so it'd be kind of awkward. But I do want Bren/Banichi. And Tano/Algini, as a matter of fact.

3) Fic, or for that matter fanart or fanvids, for River Song/Sarah Jane Smith. They are both awesome; they are both more interesting to me than the Doctor; there's no reason at all why River couldn't have dropped in on Sarah Jane's life in between the times she hung out with Eleven. A journalist and an archaeologist with a gun fetish: I want them travelling time and space, causing and averting chaos, saving the day, flirting, and generally getting to be competent and sexy.

(What I've read: a really fun "five times they met" story, or something along those lines, which I'd bookmarked on my other laptop, which has now died taking its bookmarks with it.)

Day 8

In your own space, talk about a talent (or talents) you have. Everyone's got something they're good at. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm pretty good at puzzles, I think. Word puzzles and number puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. Not necessarily three-dimensional puzzles, but that may be from lack of practice as much as lack of aptitude. I enjoy Scrabble and Sudoku and algebra.

When I was a kid, I used to say that the reason I did well in school was because I had a good memory. That might have been oversimplifying things: I have an excellent memory for things I am interested in (like fandom--I can tell you at length all about the plots and minor characters of my favourite shows or books) but will sometimes forget everyday things that I've promised to do, like write that email or take that book back to the library or pay that one bill.

I approach a lot of tasks at various jobs I've held as if they were puzzles. If I'm looking for a client file, or if I find an item that I think my coworker's been looking for all week, it's like Memory. If I move these boxes here, I can fit all the new incoming things there and it will work: just like Tetris!

Day 5

In your own space, share something non-fannish you are passionate about with your fannish friends. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I love languages. I am sadly a monolingual anglophone, but I am utterly fascinated by the ways in which human beings communicate with each other.

Day 6

In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) and that you ended up loving.

1) Fanvids in general.

2) RPF/RPS.

3) Doctor/companion romance.

I'm way, way behind on the Fandom Snowflake Challenge, but I've been seeing Mucca do it all month and they're so interesting!

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Drop a link to your post in the comments.

Day 2

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

This is going to be all Babylon 5 fanfic, because I can't seem to find the lovely hani (CJ Cherryh's felinoid spacegoing merchanters from the Chanur books) script that Spence Hill made around the time I was making baji-najiin and message cylinders for Shejidan. Also, I can't stop at three, so you're getting five recs.

So, Happy Shellfish fans, all...five of you? All two of you who aren't on Shejidan? He is now available on t-shirts. Because [livejournal.com profile] bren_cameron made one, and people started asking for them.

(I suppose it's an Internet milestone, having a CafePress shoppe?)
nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat ([geek] force is with her)
Rosie has been reading FiveMinute.net and showing them to me (their Star Trek and BSG synopses are particularly good, and the comic-strip versions--with stills from the episodes--are hilarious). So when I saw this post on Shejidan, I thought it would work as a five-minute Foreigner, for the fans on my flist who want a quick recap and for the uninitiated who want a quick run-through of Bren's internal dialogue (which is, like, half the books). Spoiler warning in effect, I suppose:

The First Foreigner Trilogy: Bren In Emoticons

Particularly amused by Bren's reaction when security comes back, and when Ilisidi flirts with him, and--well, most of it, really.

(Note: The heads of lettuce stand in for "salad", Bren's shorthand for saying he likes someone, as Ragi has no expression for liking a person, only for liking a dish of food.)

Other (slightly more) serious posts later! Lots of links to share, not sure if I have the time and brains to write them up properly...
