nenya_kanadka: Woman with megaphone yelling "God bless!" (Kidnapped god bless)
Do people say that anymore?

Anyway, note to self: have made at least a reasonable stab at making myself a dark mode version of my last layout here.

I continue to be very bad at posting, but am following along with Mucca's blog (which is currently approximately 80% Kidnapped squee by volume, which is pretty great).

Icon by [personal profile] thrillingdetectivetales.
nenya_kanadka: Arthuriana: so wrothe that he laid him down on his bed to sleep (Arthuriana wrothe)
So, sparked by an entertaining viewing of Guy Ritchie's King Arthur movie last month, Mucca has been reading various Arthurian tales and blogging her reactions.

In support of my blorbos-in-law and in the spirit of cross-temporal joy, I have made icons. Various attempts to preserve the Early Modern English spelling have been made. I may be giggling a lot.

nenya_kanadka: Wile E. Coyote about to jump into the fray in Mad Max, carrying a sign saying "witness me!" (@ witness me)
Just watched the new Space Jam with [personal profile] muccamukk and it was delightful. Thus the new icon. :D :D :D

Onward into 2022.
nenya_kanadka: text icon: "be kind" in curly script (@ be kind)
This meme has come around again! (I've changed it slightly because I'm not really in Highlander fandom.) It's always fun to see the stories behind people's icons. :D

1. Comment to this entry saying "Live long and prosper" or "Peace and long life" and I will pick 3 of your icons.

2. Make an entry in your own journal (or just reply if you prefer) and talk about the icons I picked.

[personal profile] muccamukk gave me:

This icon of a French traffic warning sign is from our trip to France in 2019. Noirmoutier, an island off the coast of Brittany, is accessible from the mainland by a causeway (Le Passage du Gois) that's underwater at high tide. At low tide it's a perfectly cromulent road, but when the tide comes in the road completely disappears under water, leaving you with this striking view of warning signs marching off into the sea. It struck me as the most hilarious thing. The sign is literally an exclamation mark inside a triangle. And, really, what else is there to say? You drive up, there's a string of !!! signs, and six feet of water where you expected your road to be, and I figure that tells you everything you need to know. You will not drive this road today.

(It turns out that this is a pretty common hazard sign in France, but this was the first time I'd noticed them, which made it even funnier to me. And, yes, there is also a bridge back to the mainland, which doesn't depend on the tides but which no one bothered to mention to me until after they showed us this. :D)

I use the icon for an "OMG!" or "WTFBBQ?" or "OH NOES" reaction. Anything where a big red triangle with a solid exclamation mark in the middle is a mood.

"Stop censoring our fucking art" -- what it says on the tin. :D I think I uploaded it around the time of the AO3 Hugo Awards kerfuffle (for which I also made icons), but mostly because of the "you must be this pure to post" anti brigade who were going around saying that AO3 was terrible because it let people post dark fic. On an aesthetic level I enjoy how simple and clean the text is, and how the red line crossing out the swearword illustrates the point of the icon.

Radagast! From the Peter Jackson movies of The Hobbit. I found them to be a mix of delightful charm and extraneous filler with too much influence from PJ's horror roots for my taste, and I don't think I ever saw the third one. But casting Sylvester McCoy as Radagast was one of the things they got right, and I really enjoyed his few minutes on screen. I like the close zoom of his face in this icon, his bright eyes and cheerfully unkempt beard. I expect him to lean out of the icon and strike up a mildly befuddling conversation with me--or more likely, my cat or the nearest bird. It pleases me.
nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (@ AO3 law)
My small contribution to the current kerfuffle, based on a comment by [personal profile] sara over at [personal profile] synecdochic's:

We built this city on porn and law! And then we won a motherfucking Hugo. And somewhere along the way oh that's right we did kind of engage in a vigorous creative reorganization of speculative fiction.

I couldn't decide if it scanned better as "porn and law" or "law and porn" so I made both, plus some with just "we built this city."

Icons obviously shareable, credit [personal profile] sara for the excellent quote!

nenya_kanadka: quality content: Gregory Peck with his shirt off (@ Gregory Peck shirtless)
I, er, maybe got a little carried away.

Also a thingy that I suppose one could use as a friends-only banner or one of those NaNoWriMo "You should be writing" inspirational graphics. (Once one had stopped wibbling in the corner, of course.)

nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (@ AO3)
Does anyone know if it is the Done Thing to post sets of icons to AO3? Like would it count as fanart?

Usually I would never, but I'm thinking of a minuscule fandom that doesn't really have a comm on DW or a Tumblr community, but that does tend to like/use my icons when I make 'em. And wondering if that would be a centralized way for people to find them all at once.

(Obviously would also still crosspost new ones here.)

ETA: And now I have done.
nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (Firestorm Martin)
I got the most lovely pile of presents in my stocking! (Jump to what I wrote.)

Fic: Hornblower (smutty) and Third Doctor (fluffy) and origfic lesbian SPACE pirates! <3 And the most adorable tiny Mrs. F- drabble for [personal profile] the_comfortable_courtesan! SQUEEE.

And art, and recs (Janeway, and Seven of Nine, and origfic f/f) and 2048 games! (More Janeway, more Seven! With the best picture choices evar.)

And icons!

Mockingbird (comics) by [personal profile] tarlanx

Firestorm (Jax) by [personal profile] falcon_horus and a matching Firestorm (Martin) one by me

If any of that looks fun, my stocking is over here and you're welcome to the icons or the fic recs or whatever. :D

Fic what I wrote: I wrote two fics (and a recs list). [personal profile] muccamukk talked me into kittens. I said, "But I don't know what to write!" and she said (picture the world's most adorable grin), "KITTENS!"

So I wrote kittens.

Title: Artemis At Sea for [archiveofourown.org profile] aqwt101
Fandom/Characters: Hornblower (TV miniseries); Hornblower/Bush, Styles
Rating/Word Count: 2600 words, gen/pre-slash
Summary: The ship's cat has kittens. Bush has opinions; Hornblower exhausts himself; Styles is given a heady commission. Started out meaning to be Hornblower vs kittens but ended up as Bush vs kittens. (Bush 0, kittens 2, ftr.)

Title: Tubbs, In Repose for [archiveofourown.org profile] schneefink
Fandom/Characters: Steerswoman (Rosemary Kirstein)/Neko Atsume crossover (yes really); Rowan, Willam, hints of Rowan/Bel and Willam/Corvus
Rating/Word Count: 2600 words, gen
Summary: Rowan vs Willam's "wizard cats." Spoilers through the end of the currently-published series (The Language of Power). My recipient asked for Rowan and Willam mentoring each other. This may have ended up more tilted in the "Rowan discovers new weird shit" direction. :P

In theory, there were several other stockings I wanted to fill. Quite possibly someday I will write Cordelia Vorkosigan vs the Cetagandan Embassy's bioengineered gift kitten, or Breq vs...any kitten at all. (Mucca: "What the hell does Breq do with a kitten??" Me: "Exactly! :D :D")

I also put together a lesbian romance (origfic f/f) recs list, since I've been reading so many of those lately. (Sometimes I want romance, and specifically want lady-loving romance. Fandom usually fills my m/m needs, and while my het needs are specific I usually know where to go for those. But I've been on an f/f binge lately and have been delighted with many of the results.) I should probably copy & paste the whole recs list in here at some point--maybe after I've read the last couple on the list, and a few of the ones recced to me in my stocking. (Notably, there was exactly one book that appeared on both lists. Since I've been waiting for Romancing The Inventor to exist for a couple of years, I don't mind. :D)
nenya_kanadka: towsell-mowsell on a sopha (Comfortable Courtesan sopha)
Because our heroine is so very good at foiling the plots of the petty and vindictive enemies of her circle (most recently a plagiarizing poet):

Madame Nemesis is, as always, from [personal profile] the_comfortable_courtesan, a deeply delightful serialized historical novel. Other icons in the series may be found via my tags.
nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (Power Girl grin)
Read a whole bunch of Power Girl before I left for town, and OMG I love her so much. :D I mean, I love Kryptonians in the first place, and I love her sense of humour, and I love her no-nonsense approach to everything from interdimensional identity angst to how people react to her big boobs. She's just so much FUN and so relatable. While punching evil in the face. SO GREAT.

(I've come to the conclusion after googling Power Girl cosplay the other night that if you're posing for cosplay pics as PG without a big grin on your face, or if you're playing her as a sex kitten because of the boob window, you're doin' it rong. I am pleased to note that most of the Power Girl cosplayers I found were doing it with enthusiasm and biceps and YAY. Excellent. :D)

Anyhow, there are icons!

My only problem now is that I want to use ALL of them, possibly on the same post. :D
nenya_kanadka: art of African woman in gold scarf (@ art - woman in gold)
Ran across these gorgeous icons while fiddling with Dreamwidth layouts tonight.

Diasporic African Art icons by [personal profile] arobynsung from art by two artists (listed as Muti and Keith Mallet) in two very different styles.

Gorgeous stuff.

(Meanwhile, I am ignoring the things I want to tweak about this current layout (Calling Card by [personal profile] bakesale) because my eyes are crossing. It's a really lovely layout, though very different from the previous one by [personal profile] rosecarmine that I've had for a year and a half, so I'm not sure if it's the change or the sleepiness that's making it look a bit wonky to me. I adore the purple, though. Mucca's faves are growing on me. (I like things because they are blue; Mucca likes them because they are purple.)

Off to watch some ridiculous TV instead.)

nenya_kanadka: text exclaming "Oh, Sandy!" (Comfortable Courtesan Sandy)
Is what I would like to be doing with my lady, but recent events conspire against us.

But more Madame C- C- icons! Icons are calming cool.

And from a comment, for the OT3 shippers:

Previous entries may be found via tags.

(Have I mentioned that the first two sections of the serial are out as free e-books? Because they are.)
nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (Default)
Because obviously the thing to do when one finally gets a chance with one's laptop while travelling is to spend a couple of hours making text icons. (What can I say? I find it soothing.)

From a recent episode (to [SPOILER] while plotting for the good of their friends, and incidentally having a cuddle: "O, you say I get into fusses but compared to Miss A-, I am Patience on a monument.")

I am Patience on a monument

And a common exclamation from the commentariat regarding Mr MacD-:
Oh, Sandy!

(Previous set is over here: "Epistolary mathematickal flirtation...and a wombatt!")

For those of you on my flist who are following along with [personal profile] oursin's historickal serial over at [personal profile] the_comfortable_courtesan/[livejournal.com profile] madame_c_c, I bring icons in celebration of the latest twist in the fates of Miss G-- and Mr T--'s statistics-and-science-infused romance:

nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (Jupiter Ascending dress)
Somebody else has made some, right? Somewhere? Twenty minutes of googling last night didn't turn up anything. Thus a few of Jupiter in her swanky dress--chosen, admittedly, for the pretty pretty dress rather than for the scene itself--and please let me know in comments if you've seen more JA icons elsewhere!

I suppose this counts as a retro post, given it's my tenth LJ anniversary? :P

Mostly posting this to talk about the icons picked for me, but people can join in if they like.

1. Reply to this post with "not today," and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

And [personal profile] muccamukk picked these five:

I feel this is an excellent proposition (I had, no lie, been planning to create an icon meme of similar proportions myself), and will do it! Comment away, me lads & lasses.

"Haleth for President: Service, Honour, Liberty & Security"
This one is from [livejournal.com profile] bellatrys, who is both a great LOTR fan (which is where I met her) and the person who got me paying attention to politics for the first time (in about 2004). Haleth, of course, was a chief of the Edain (humans) in the First Age, who after the death of her father in battle with Morgoth, famously led her people cross-country through dangerous (possibly giant-spider-infested) territory to finally find a safe haven near Galadriel's brother and Luthien's parents homes. The quote I like is that she did this by the strength of her will--she was so charismatic and such a great leader that people believed in her enough to dare the dangers, and she brought them safely through to the other side. So it's a "Women can be great leaders, fuck yeah!" icon, as well as a "Woohoo Tolkien!" icon and a "Politics should be about doing good for real people" icon. And a "yay Bellatrys" icon, since I miss her (she hasn't posted in a couple of years now).

Cherry blossoms. I got this one during [livejournal.com profile] help_japan, because my mom used to always talk about the cherry blossoms on trees in Japan, and how they were part of a lot of spring festivals and stuff, especially the ones for young girls. (When I was wee, I lived far too far north for cherry or apple trees.) Cherry trees also remind me of kissing Mucca in Victoria, and shaking the trees to make flowers fall down on us. :D And also, of course, one of my favourite authors is C. J. Cherryh, whose actual last name is Cherry.

Bren Cameron and Jago, "man'chi"
This is the front cover to one of C. J. Cherryh's books in the Foreigner series. Bren, the short (relatively; atevi are 8-9 ft) blond human, is a diplomat, somewhere between an interpreter and an ambassador. He's the only human allowed to live amongst the atevi; Jago, the tall woman behind him, starts out being his guard and ends up meaning much, much more to him, and he to her, by later in the series. "Man'chi"--the atevi are very, very alien, even down to the emotions they feel and how they react in a crisis. Man'chi is the devotion atevi feel for a leader--the centre of their lives, the one who gives their life meaning. It's also the bonds between members of a clan (who all share man'chi to their leader ('aiji')), and the way one feels that all is right in the universe. Basically, atevi Have Strong Feelings About Loyalty.

X-23 is, let me see if I remember this right, the female clone of Wolverine. So this icon is all Mucca's fault. :D X-23's comics are angsty like whoa, but it's the kind of angsty backstory that I eat right up--raised by an evil government conspiracy to be an assassin, given scary powers, now trying to Find Self and learn to Be A Good Person, with Help From Friends, particularly big-brother figures. I can do without the suicide attempts, but I really love her and Gambit, and the bits where they are running around kicking things in the head and trying to solve mysteries are pretty cool too. I guess I have a thing for brunettes in black leather, too. :D I use it to add a touch of badass, or "yay comics".

Girl with Canadian flag on her cheek, probably one of those temporary tattoos one sticks on on Canada Day.
Pretty self-explanatory. :) This is my "Go Canada Go!" icon, and also just a generally cute, nonthreatening one. (As opposed to, say, X-23. :D) I vaguely feel that I swiped it from someone somewhere along the line, but unless it was Mucca I can't remember who!
