1. Reply to this post with "UNICORNS", and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.I feel this is an excellent proposition (I had, no lie, been planning to create an icon meme of similar proportions myself), and will do it! Comment away, me lads & lasses.

"Haleth for President: Service, Honour, Liberty & Security"
This one is from
bellatrys, who is both a great LOTR fan (which is where I met her) and the person who got me paying attention to politics for the first time (in about 2004). Haleth, of course, was a chief of the Edain (humans) in the First Age, who after the death of her father in battle with Morgoth, famously led her people cross-country through dangerous (possibly giant-spider-infested) territory to finally find a safe haven near Galadriel's brother and Luthien's parents homes. The quote I like is that she did this by the strength of her will--she was so charismatic and such a great leader that people believed in her enough to dare the dangers, and she brought them safely through to the other side. So it's a "Women can be great leaders, fuck yeah!" icon, as well as a "Woohoo Tolkien!" icon and a "Politics should be about doing good for real people" icon. And a "yay Bellatrys" icon, since I miss her (she hasn't posted in a couple of years now).

Cherry blossoms. I got this one during
help_japan, because my mom used to always talk about the cherry blossoms on trees in Japan, and how they were part of a lot of spring festivals and stuff, especially the ones for young girls. (When I was wee, I lived far too far north for cherry or apple trees.) Cherry trees also remind me of kissing Mucca in Victoria, and shaking the trees to make flowers fall down on us. :D And also, of course, one of my favourite authors is C. J. Cherryh, whose actual last name is Cherry.

Bren Cameron and Jago, "man'chi"
This is the front cover to one of C. J. Cherryh's books in the
Foreigner series. Bren, the short (relatively; atevi are 8-9 ft) blond human, is a diplomat, somewhere between an interpreter and an ambassador. He's the only human allowed to live amongst the atevi; Jago, the tall woman behind him, starts out being his guard and ends up meaning much, much more to him, and he to her, by later in the series. "Man'chi"--the atevi are very, very alien, even down to the emotions they feel and how they react in a crisis. Man'chi is the devotion atevi feel for a leader--the centre of their lives, the one who gives their life meaning. It's also the bonds between members of a clan (who all share man'chi to their leader ('aiji')), and the way one feels that all is right in the universe. Basically, atevi Have Strong Feelings About Loyalty.

X-23 is, let me see if I remember this right, the female clone of Wolverine. So this icon is all Mucca's fault. :D X-23's comics are angsty like whoa, but it's the kind of angsty backstory that I eat right up--raised by an evil government conspiracy to be an assassin, given scary powers, now trying to Find Self and learn to Be A Good Person, with Help From Friends, particularly big-brother figures. I can do without the suicide attempts, but I really love her and Gambit, and the bits where they are running around kicking things in the head and trying to solve mysteries are pretty cool too. I guess I have a thing for brunettes in black leather, too. :D I use it to add a touch of badass, or "yay comics".

Girl with Canadian flag on her cheek, probably one of those temporary tattoos one sticks on on Canada Day.
Pretty self-explanatory. :) This is my "Go Canada Go!" icon, and also just a generally cute, nonthreatening one. (As opposed to, say, X-23. :D) I vaguely feel that I swiped it from someone somewhere along the line, but unless it was Mucca I can't remember who!
