First-line meme (from Mucca and Kore)
Sep. 30th, 2015 04:03 pmList the first lines of your last ten stories. See if there are any patterns.
1. Once upon a time the Smoking Alpaca was lounging about in her smoking jacket, reading forbidden Belladonna femslash on the compound divan, when the Sweater Pony clopped in.
2. "Oh no!" cried the Twelfth Doctor.
3. The Doctor slams the TARDIS doors shut behind him and leans back against them, hearts pounding.
4. The flash of black fire from the Shadow vessel masks the stomach-dropping lurch as the rip in spacetime grabs her.
5. The last thing Susan had ever expected to be doing in Tuzanor was watching Daffy Duck.
6. "Close your eyes."
7. The figure in brown and grey melted out of the shadows and matched his stride before Stephen even realized he was there.
8. Michael wasn't sure what it was that brought him out of a sound sleep at three o'clock in the morning.
9. Autumn in the Shire was always glorious, but Frodo thought the orange and red and yellow leaves and the hazy mists over the Water were especially beautiful this year.
10. "Go to bed, Ma. Really. We're fine."
First of all, ten fics takes me back three years. O.O God, I write slow.
Less opening dialogue than I thought! Less present-tense than I thought, too. (All the dialogue ones that don't show tense immediately are past tense in the next sentence.)
Does tend to bring up the protagonist's name fairly quickly. I seem to be attempting to grab people's interest with the first line; don't know how effective that is.
I still write in small fandoms. (The Twelve & Clara fic was for FFA's Bad Bang, thus a small corner of a megafandom, and not serious fic in the slightest.)
