Today would also have been Gregory Peck's 101st birthday. In honour of which, please have some screenshots of him as a young, ridiculously pretty priest, kneeling down and kissing his mentor's hand.









All from The Keys To The Kingdom, 1944. The one where he's looking up all puppy-dog-eyed like, "Please approve of me!" (which is pretty much the context) is doing things to me. (Peck in a 1987 interview: "I hadn’t learned how to relax and how to concentrate. All I had was sincerity." HELP)

And, you know, it's not that I find either the Pope or John Gielgud attractive in any way, but Peck does it again in The Scarlet & The Black (1983) (also one of my favourite movies ever):







The hair-petting, argh! The fact that this scene is a small moment of personal approval from someone the character respects, after a whole movie of incredible, inconspicuous bravery and self-sacrifice!

(According to Wikipedia, in real life Gregory Peck was also outspoken against the House Un-American Activities Committee and was a faithful Catholic who disagreed with the church about contraception and abortion. While having excellent taste in women and an almost 50-year-long marriage. I'm fond.)

Nenya had just gotten up, and I played first capped scene for her without any kind of content warning, and she said, "Good LORD!" and then was speechless for several minutes.

It's actually a pretty good movie. Normally missionary plots make my eye twitch, but he was either a really good missionary or a really BAD one (he certainly didn't seem to convert very many people, and converted zero people on screen).

AND ALSO the thing about that scene that you don't get from the caps is how gracefully he drops to his knees. Like he's just striding into the room with this earnest but cheerful "It's so good to see you again!" look on his face, with his hand out and you think they're going to shake hands BUT NO, he just sliiiides to his knees like he practiced it seventy billion times (which both Peck who had dance training and the character as a baby priest probably DID) and kisses his mentor's hand all devoted-like.

I just.

.....and by contrast, forty years later, he kneels down slowly and carefully (he's sitting and the Pope is standing, the reverse of the other scene), down on one knee, then down on the other, and it's all...the spirit is willing but he's 67, but still all respectful and devoted and HELP ME <3

(You really must at least watch at least Spellbound if you haven't seen it. Ingrid Bergman is smart and dedicated to Saving Her Woobie, and Peck wanders around with a stunned look and occasionally says things like "I'm not worth loving!" and/or faints into her arms.)

My brain is intrigued by the concept that he did not spend his entire life with carefully-slicked-back hair, though. I mean I very much LIKE the (say) KTTK look, but my brain is record-scratching here. Interesting sensation.

Oh maybe. I think he's a little young in this for it to be '59 though. The man lived in California, so he probably was a the beach a fair bit.

Maybe he was taking a break from almost drowning in Moby Dick. (Of filming the tank scenes in Navarone, "It's days like that you sip a little brandy.")

Tonight I saw a movie where he wore a tuxedo while angsting with increasingly frantic energy.

Mucca hasn't screencapped but I plan to.

(I think he may actually crack up in the tuxedo scene? He actually loses it and starts cackling with wild laughter at how fucked he is. It's pretty amazing. 1949 so he's begun to expand his acting! range.)

(Then he faceplants into Ava Gardner's boobs, or at least gets slightly vampiric in the region of her neck. Lol.)
