it's months later and I still can't quite believe that's an actual thing that happened and the movie didn't skew off into science fiction

That's how I felt when I first read Elizabeth Bear's Hammered shortly after it first came out. "Oh, of course; this is a science fiction novel after all -- wait, whats-his-bucket talking about his husband isn't because it's SF, it's because it's Canada!" Followed by a little happy glowing over how the world surprised me by being a little nicer than I was accustomed to thinking it was.
