The Feather At The Pivot Point, Katrina Cornwell & L'Rell, 3300 words, Teen (for the Cornwell Fanworks Challenge December 2018)

This year I wrote and posted:
Just under 24,000 words over ten stories in three fandoms. Which, since I also just crossed the 100,000 words line for total wordcount on that account, is also almost a quarter of the fic ever posted to my main AO3 account! Huh.

Overall thoughts:
It was a really, really, really gay year.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
A fair bit more. I had a couple years of posting 2-3k a year, and then in 2017 I wrote about 13k, mostly one-offs for fests like [community profile] fandom_stocking and [profile] b5_love. (Moral of that story: if I don't have a major fandom, low-impact fests are the way to get me to write!) The first half of 2018 was the first time since the height of my Babylon 5 fandom involvement ~5 years ago that I was posting free-range fic all over the place, though.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Well, on January 1, 2018 I didn't know Emperor Philippa Georgiou existed...
I also didn't expect to write 17,000 words of fairly explicit femslash. If I had expected to write femslash for Disco, it would have been Michael/Philippa. (In retrospect, that I fell hard for the ship with two women over 50 instead of just one shouldn't have been that much of a surprise.)

This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most: My sexuality is women over 35 in Starfleet uniforms. See, uh, everything, starting with Terrible As An Army With Banners.

What's your own favourite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
I love all my children! (Though Non-Regulation Uses is up there. :D)
But shout-out to Logic Suggests, the haitus challenge fic that I ended up awfully charmed by, in which I wrote a) Sarek, having b) (non-explicit) sex, with c) someone not Amanda. And liked it? The only real het of the year.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
This was the first year that writing explicit, detailed, physical femslash really clicked for me. There's still a high proportion of angst to smut in it, but I went from "It feels too close to home to write" to "Ah yes, more iddy fic with fucking in it, why not?" What I learned was it felt really, really good to be able to do that finally.
I also wrote my first "dead dove: do not eat" graphic depictions of violence fic. From which I learned that it's weirdly cathartic to put that down on paper, even though it's not something I plan to do a lot of in general terms.
In general, I discovered that all those "whump your fave" tropes I've rarely gotten before suddenly work for me with the right fave (who is, apparently, a middle-aged female stoic woobie).

My best story of this year: Fuck if I know. I'm pretty pleased with the whole Georgiou/Cornwell arc in general, though.

My most popular story of this year: Surprising me, the 8k of Mirrorverse dubcon/slavefic Non-Regulation Uses. I think people must have found it through the kink tags.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Why isn't everyone flocking to the dialogue-only Third Doctor/Brigadier/Liz Shaw fade-to-black smutfic I wrote for Fandom Stocking 2017? I mean, it's not like it's an OT3 from an obscure era of an old TV show or anything!

My least favourite story this year: I'm not satisfied with Said The Spider, because I want Emperor Georgiou to menace Prime Tilly in a sexy way for more than a double drabble. But I couldn't quite make it go, so I posted what I had.

Most fun story to write: Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover -- 600 words of Chrisjen Avasarala pining for her hot Martian marine. <3

Story with the sweetest moment: Logic Suggests, the bit where Sarek doesn't judge Kat for being illogical.

Story with the single sexiest moment: Look, it's difficult. All the times Kat was on her knees were pretty great though. :D

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Nine-Tenths, the one where I flat-out torture my fave for 700 words, from the POV of the torturer. Yeah.

Most overdue: I've been meaning to write Three/Liz/Brig for years!

Most eye roll-worthy title: I kinda like all my titles, but titling a story after a Little Prince quote was probably pretty cheesy (Essential—an odd duck—the poly prequel portion of the sequel to the existing Cornwell/Georgiou series).
My favourite title all year, and perhaps of anything I've written, was Terrible As An Army With Banners. I can't take credit for that one, though: it's all [personal profile] kore's fault.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: The first Georgiou/Cornwell one, I guess. I went from "This could be interesting, but I can't figure out how I'd make it work—I mean, do they even have screentime really?" to "I ship it with the fire of a hundred burning suns" and never really looked back.

Hardest story to write: Fest fic tends to be difficult to write because I'm not only writing to please myself. :D On the other hand, completely self-indulgent stuff can be hard because trying to structure it and make myself focus can be an issue. (See: next question.)

Biggest disappointment: That I didn't get the main story for Getting Better (At Being Haunted), the sequel to *waves hands* the rest of this madness, done before the end of the year. It'll be interesting if I have to try to keep momentum going while season 2 is airing (though less potential for jossing than fic about the series lead would be, I guess).

Biggest surprise: Meeting [personal profile] indiegal in AO3 comments! <3<3 :D

In conclusion: It was a really, really, really gay year.

Fic-writing goals for 2019: Finish the emotionally tangled Kat Cornwell post-war fixit sequel to this year's series, in which she finally sleeps with someone non-evil, gets some closure, and maybe pets a therapy tribble.

1. Your main fandom of the year?
Star Trek: Discovery!

2. Your favourite film you watched this year?
Probably Thor: Ragnarok in terms of sheer entertainment value. (I am not "in" MCU fandom really, so don't have strong opinions on characterization or lack thereof, which may have helped.) Thor: Ragnarok 4D too. :D
Also finally saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (and the 2016 sequel) on the strength of Michelle Yeoh and really enjoyed them. Michelle Yeoh has instant chemistry with everyone, especially other women. Whew. Black Panther was also epic and cool.

3. Your favourite book read this year?
SFF: Exit Strategy (the last Murderbot novella)
Non-SFF: The first couple of Mrs. Pollifax novels (mainlined while travelling to WorldCon)
Nonfiction: The Alley of Love and Yellow Jasmines, autobiography by Shohreh Aghdashloo

4. Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
I'm not a super musical person (I like music but I'm rather deaf), but I loved Janelle Monae's Dirty Computer "emotion picture."

5. Your favourite TV show of the year?
Disco again, but also The Expanse (caught up from the beginning, currently waiting for season 4). Doctor Who with Thirteen was also pretty great.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Discord chat! And The Admiral's Legion generally. <3
This was also the first year I ever attended a sci-fi convention. WorldCon 76 in August 2018 was amazing! Thousands of nerds of all stripes doing cool shit for like five days. Also I cosplayed (the easiest costume ever) and people liked it. And I got to shoot lasers!
(Then I sort of got to ride along virtually to Destination Star Trek in Birmingham, UK in October with a bunch of the Legion. There now exists a group photo with Jayne Brook in which I am represented by a tribble. (I also now own the tribble.))

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
It was one of those years where Mucca and I dipped into one another's fannish experience but didn't really share huge feels about the same fandom at the same time. (On the other hand: WorldCon! :D)

8. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
...did I...have one...? Non-female fave of the year would be Murderbot for sure, but Murderbot is not a boy, and definitely doesn't do...that stuff...so idek. (Residual Gregory Peck feels from last year remain, I suppose.)

9. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Katrina Cornwell

9b. Your girlfriend met in fandom this year?
[personal profile] indiegal, who knows what she did ;-) <3

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
MURDERBOT WON A HUGO! The Legion met Jayne!

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
I'm really enjoying Thirteen's run on Doctor Who so far (I LOVE HER FACE!) but haven't caught fannish/fic/meta feels for it yet.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I've already seen season 1 of the batshit delight that is Legends of Tomorrow, but I want to get back into it with the more recent seasons. I hear their commitment to sparkle motion is only equalled by Sleepy Hollow S1, and I am here for that.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Disco returns January 17! Seeing the Spider-verse movie when I'm in town. The Murderbot novel. Captain Marvel! Maybe more of The Expanse?

That's a lot of words for someone who kept saying they didn't really write much.

Girlfriends!

Wah, I was going to do this post, too, and I spent a bunch of time on it and then I checked the rich text editor for something and apparently I had a code error and DW ate the entire entry. And now I'm kind of "well that was too much time to do twice!" Sigh.

I'm glad you had a productive and fun year, and I'm glad you dragged me into Discord!

I wholeheartedly support this goal.

Progress is progress! And I am definitely interested in this fic. Just as additional motivation, I have left you something on fandom stocking that may hopefully inspire.
