I can actually use them on mobile!!! It's so much more pleasant.

(I have somehow become one of those people whose primary computing device is their smartphone. I don't know how this happened. It sure makes fandom.wikia.com nearly unusable, but on the other hand Baba Is You is indeed available for Android (and I think iPhone?) so all is not lost.)

Anyway Mucca has an entry over here talking about the new features and how to give Dreamwidth your feedback if you have some. They're beta testing options right now but will be the default for everyone soon.

In support of my blorbos-in-law and in the spirit of cross-temporal joy, I have made icons. Various attempts to preserve the Early Modern English spelling have been made. I may be giggling a lot.

@sunflower-auction: sharks and hats for Ukraine!

So there's about a day and a half left to bid on items at sunflower_auction! Bidding is open till 21:59 UTC on May 30 (countdown) and the auction is in support of Ukraine.

There are some really nifty things on offer, searchable through the tags--mostly online fanworks but a few physical items.

Which is where I come in! I am offering a couple of crocheted items, namely some hats and some very cute stuffed toy sharks. My listing is here with more details and how to bid.

In my lifetime, I've now seen:

* gay marriage legalized nationally across the entire United States of America (and also Canada, before that)
* a Black US president
* a female US vice president (a Black and Indian-American woman, at that)

When I was a kid, they told us the last two of those would happen someday, and I believed it in the vague way that I thought we might someday have humans on Mars, but it seemed pretty distant and vague. When I first started paying attention to LGBTQ+ rights, the first one seemed impossible.

And yet.

I'm thinking too about how every US presidential election since 2008, aside from Obama's reelection in 2012 where I don't even remember who Romney's running mate was (but I know it was a guy), has had at least one woman on the ticket for one of the major parties. Palin, Clinton, now Harris. And this year's Democratic primary had several women in it. It seems like we're at a tipping point where, just like when all of a sudden there was a point where state after state was passing marriage equality, we might start having women nominated all the time now. Then they'll start winning. Then it will be normal to have either a man or a woman leading the US, the way it's not shocking anymore to have a female senator or congressperson.

(Canada, it's time to catch up on female party leaders please!)

And Oklahoma (!!) has elected the first nonbinary state legislator in the US in Mauree Turner, and former Biden staffer Sarah McBride has just been elected to the state senate in Delaware, bringing the number of trans people at state legislature level to five. State senate is what Obama was doing before he got elected to the senate at national level. We're going to hear more from these folks, I think.

And in four years NASA plans to send the first woman to the moon.

2020's been A Year. But even now good things are happening.

Two comments on the 2020 election:

A president whose response to the deaths of so many of his fellow-citizens is the urge to offer COMFORT is making me choke up a little bit. Basic human decency! Yeah, there's too much religion in American politics, but one of the good uses of religion is comfort in sorrow. And that raw genuine expression of my-sorrow-to-yours, I grieve with thee--can we have more of that, please? While we get to work.

On a lighter note, I glanced through my few remaining memes from the 2008 election to see if I had any that were still relevant, and I found this one and cracked up. (Note to self: attempt to find out who created it.) So for all my old RahmBamaRama peeps, in fondness and in celebration, I give you--

Today I Learned that "What What In The Butt" is an actual song? I'm not sure how I missed that it wasn't just a random meme.

(There are so many memes and cultural moments whose sources are lost in the mists of time--from the perspective of someone who grew up under a rock on Mars--that sometimes I just shrug my shoulders and roll with it, hey.)

But muccamukk dug it up and showed it to me over waffles just now and I am charmed as fuck. This is genuinely the most wholesome, adorable, hilarious song about buttsex ever. He just wants to clarify what's being proposed! He would like it very much but he just wants to be clear on *what* is going in the butt. Also he's a total cutie. There are roses! And flirty eyebrows! He's a delicate flower! (Who knows what he wants!)

I love humanity. Boom de yada.

new layout!

Realized I was mostly using my layout here to do style=mine when people had layouts that didn't work for me (including ones that are perfectly cromulent on my laptop, but not on my phone). The previous dark purple one is super pretty, and easy on my eyes on migrainey days, but was starting to feel a bit closed-in for reading longer pieces. So time for a change.

New layout is Free Your Mind 2019 by tofuhouse. Which admittedly everyone and their cat are using, but that's because it's a good one. 😊

Of course once I'd fucked about with the colours I realized I'd given myself something vaguely reminiscent of one or more Tumblr dash colour schemes. Oh well. I can always tweak that. Considering adding some accent colours somewhere to break up all the blue. And maybe figuring out how to make the white more of a cream? Idk.

ETA: Note to self, icons in entries still weird on phone? Content fine, icon placement weird.

Like I said I'm mostly using this to make DW look how I need it when I need to override something (I'm not that prolific a poster these days, lol, despite lurking a bit) but if it's murdering your eyes to look at, do let me know!

This icon of a French traffic warning sign is from our trip to France in 2019. Noirmoutier, an island off the coast of Brittany, is accessible from the mainland by a causeway (Le Passage du Gois) that's underwater at high tide. At low tide it's a perfectly cromulent road, but when the tide comes in the road completely disappears under water, leaving you with this striking view of warning signs marching off into the sea. It struck me as the most hilarious thing. The sign is literally an exclamation mark inside a triangle. And, really, what else is there to say? You drive up, there's a string of !!! signs, and six feet of water where you expected your road to be, and I figure that tells you everything you need to know. You will not drive this road today.

(It turns out that this is a pretty common hazard sign in France, but this was the first time I'd noticed them, which made it even funnier to me. And, yes, there is also a bridge back to the mainland, which doesn't depend on the tides but which no one bothered to mention to me until after they showed us this. :D)

I use the icon for an "OMG!" or "WTFBBQ?" or "OH NOES" reaction. Anything where a big red triangle with a solid exclamation mark in the middle is a mood.

"Stop censoring our ~~fucking~~ art" -- what it says on the tin. :D I think I uploaded it around the time of the AO3 Hugo Awards kerfuffle (for which I also made icons), but mostly because of the "you must be this pure to post" anti brigade who were going around saying that AO3 was terrible because it let people post dark fic. On an aesthetic level I enjoy how simple and clean the text is, and how the red line crossing out the swearword illustrates the point of the icon.

Radagast! From the Peter Jackson movies of The Hobbit. I found them to be a mix of delightful charm and extraneous filler with too much influence from PJ's horror roots for my taste, and I don't think I ever saw the third one. But casting Sylvester McCoy as Radagast was one of the things they got right, and I really enjoyed his few minutes on screen. I like the close zoom of his face in this icon, his bright eyes and cheerfully unkempt beard. I expect him to lean out of the icon and strike up a mildly befuddling conversation with me--or more likely, my cat or the nearest bird. It pleases me.

We built this city on porn and law! And then we won a motherfucking Hugo. And somewhere along the way oh that's right we did kind of engage in a vigorous creative reorganization of speculative fiction.

I couldn't decide if it scanned better as "porn and law" or "law and porn" so I made both, plus some with just "we built this city."

New layout!

The colours on the previous layout were gorgeous, but it was horrendous on mobile. Since I've been using my phone a lot lately, I finally remembered I wanted to change that!

I may tweak this one slightly (for background image/icon size/colours possibly more blue-purple than pink-purple), but I love it already. Let me know if it's illegible or headachy or etc for you as a reader though.

ETA note to self: updated the background, haven't figured out how to change round icons as the CSS is different from what I'm familiar with...hmm!

Holy shit. A03 won the Hugo for Best Related Work!

It feels kind of like the big fancy official people, the public face of the genre of my heart, have just acknowledged that the way I have done fandom for 20 years exists. And is important.

That feels pretty good. ❤

(And, of course, reminds me that all along many of the Famous People have also been my kind of fan, too.)

Yay, new fic! I wrote this for the small but lovely Cornwell Fanworks Challenge December 2018 organized by pixiedane over the holidays.

Title: The Feather At The Pivot Point for lodessa
Fandom/Pairing: Star Trek: Discovery, Katrina Cornwell & L'Rell
Rating/Word Count: Teen (for mentions of violence), about 3300 words
Summary: From this prompt:
As the new head of the Klingon Empire, L'Rell only agrees to initiate diplomatic relations with the Federation on the condition that she is allowed to name the ambassador assigned to Qo'noS: Katrina Cornwell.

Notes:
This turned out to be less about what it's like being an ambassador to the Klingons and more Kat's inner journey from "Ohhh fuck no" at the suggestion to deciding that it could be what she's meant to do next. It was satisfying to me to try to hold in tension the fact that Kat's experienced quite a lot of trauma at the hands of the Klingons (both directly and indirectly) and that she does have that personal connection with L'Rell--a connection that seems to bypass all the differences between them but that was forged in the middle of all that trauma in the first place. Plus I think Kat's someone who would always be trying to understand and who really does want peace. This isn't shippy exactly but I feel like it's step 1 in perhaps a long series of events that eventually ends in Kat/L'Rell.

After fic reveals for the Cornwell Fanworks Challenge we were all guessing who'd written what, and apparently I am super easy to guess? Kat having angsty internal monologues about another woman was apparently pretty obvious even if the woman in question was L'Rell instead of Georgiou. :D

Ooh! AND: I got fic! Two amazing stories, both variations on Kat/Georgiou (it's like people know me):

Loyalty by R_S_B: Mirror Cornwell/Mirror Georgiou, 1200 words, Teen
Inquisitor Katrina Cornwell is brought before her Emperor, suspected of collaboration with the treacherous Gabriel Lorca.
Reads like a prequel to my Non-Regulation Uses. :D Loyalty, betrayal, and the teeniest bit of bloodplay.

Darling, Dearest by Oparu: Katrina Cornwell/Mirror Georgiou, 1500 words, Teen
Katrina Cornwell undertakes a dangerous diplomatic mission and is assigned a top Section 31 operative to keep her safe. Posing as a married couple is one of the oldest covers in the spy playblook, but Kat is not at all prepared when her 'wife' is former Emperor Philippa Georgiou.
I need like 75,000 more words of this concept, three seasons, and a movie. :D Kat and Georgiou are wonderful here, with Kat simultaneously freaked out by and drawn to Georgiou, and lots of spiky back-and-forth about what they think of each other and of their other-universe counterparts. Gorgeous and just slightly unsettling--like you would expect from "undercover as married" with Emperor Georgiou!

There were some other really great fics in the fest (two standouts were lizbee's Rainfall with Kat and Amanda on the eve of the season 1 finale, and mselliejane's Live Bait in which Kat eats gagh while imprisoned) and I'm really enjoying these tiny fests for my corner of the fandom (cf the Disco Hiatus Exchange 2017 that Lizbee ran last year) and hope we do another one in 2019. <3

OMG hi, you guys!

I feel like a dozen people have followed me here over the last couple of weeks, and half of them are completely new people I've never interacted with before, so...probably I should make a post? Er? Yes? :P

I'm actually really thrilled about all the increased posting on DW of late (even if the proximate cause, Nipplegate, is terrible). I've just been lurking a lot and being terrible at making my own posts, and sometimes commenting on other people's entries and attempting to catch up and then falling behind again, but I'm so glad to see everyone. *waves enthusiastically*

(Weirdly, I've also been feeling more connected to fandom than I have in years...through Discord. I think it fills the shitposting need for me, something I never really made happen on Tumblr. *also waves to the Cranky Fangirls and Admiral's Legion on this here DW friends' list* You lot are awesome. <3)

Let's see, what else! Fannishly I'm looking forward to the Doctor Who New Year's special, ST Discovery season 2 (MORE PHILIPPA PLZ & THX, also HI AGAIN HUGH, also Tig Notaro *swoon*), Captain Marvel, Spider-verse (Miles Morales has a movie?? it's apparently very good!), and I guess The Expanse season 4 if the corporate overlords ever make that happen. :D

~~Eternally disappoint that Shohreh Aghdashloo will probably never appear on Disco as Commodore Paris, but what can you do?~~

Oh and the Murderbot novel! I just finished the final novella (of 4) and ahhhh amazing, such a good and satisfying conclusion to that arc. Also I will never not have feelings about Murderbot ( Exit Strategy spoilers ), okay? FEELINGS, I tell you.

My Labyrinth Orrery, And So Can You!

(Post I've been meaning to make for the better part of a year--finally getting around to it! Title after Stephen Colbert's "I Am America, And So Can You.")

In my front yard I have a meditation labyrinth that muccamukk's mom created years ago. It's also an orrery for the planets of our solar system. Whenever I mention it people think it's pretty cool, so I thought I'd do a writeup.

An orrery (quoth Wikipedia) is "a mechanical model of the solar system that illustrates or predicts the relative positions and motions of the planets." It does not have to be to scale (and in fact usually isn't) and it may or may not be set up to move under its own power. This one is human-powered in the sense that every ten days I go out on my lawn and move the various planets around to their latest relative positions.

A labyrinth is a maze-like pattern you can walk for meditation purposes or just for fun. Many of them are laid out more or less as concentric circles, which proved handy when Mucca's mom decided to use the big labyrinth on the front lawn to set up her orrery.

You can obviously have a labyrinth without an orrery, or vice versa, but in our case they are two tastes that taste great together. :D

My Labyrinth Orrery

We have two labyrinths on our lawn, built ages ago by Mucca's parents (who are labyrinth experts and enthusiasts). The one on our front lawn is a Chartres-style labyrinth, and looks like this:

If you're interested, you can make something like this pretty easily.

The neat thing about all this is that you can fairly easily set up a system that illustrates where the various planets are in relation to one another and the sun, and how fast they're moving, in terms of degrees of a circle. In other words, you can know if Mars is on the same side of the sun as Earth is, and how fast Mercury goes around the sun, and whether Venus is passing in front of Jupiter. And since you have markers set out for each planet, you can then go stand at Earth and look around to see where the other planets will appear as seen from our perspective.

The even neater thing is that it's all in motion, and as you update it, you can actually watch the solar system move in more or less real time.
